Raising the achievement of the disadvantaged

What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium is funding allocated to the school for pupils of low-income families who are known to be eligible for free school meals (see eligibility link below).  In 2012 the Pupil Premium was extended to pupils who have been eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever 6 Free School Meals measure).

Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked-after continuously for more than six months, and a smaller amount for the children of service personnel.

The main aim of the funding is to raise the attainment of disadvantaged children and young people.  The funding equates to £1320 per eligible primary school child and £1900 per pupil for looked-after children who have been looked after for 1 day or more, are adopted or are under a Special Guardianship Order or Residence Order.

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit.  However, they are accountable for how they use the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families and the other target groups.  New measures have been included in the performance tables that show the achievement of pupils who attract the Pupil Premium.

School accountability for the pupil premium

The Pupil Premium is paid to schools as they are best placed to assess what additional provision their pupils need. Ofsted inspections will report on how the school’s use of the funding affects the attainment of their disadvantaged pupils.

Schools are held to account through performance tables, which include data on:

• The attainment of the pupils who attract the funding;
• The progress made by these pupils;
• The gap in attainment between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.

Core Offer

The school has a Core Offer for pupils eligible for Pupil Premium. The school will assess which relevant elements of the Core Offer will apply to eligible children, dependent on their achievement, progress and needs as identified by the school within the allocation designated for Pupil Premium.  The Core Offer for eligible pupils consists of the following:

• academic interventions and support to raise the attainment and progress in core subjects of English (reading and Writing) and Maths;
• enrichment activities to provide wider opportunities and enhance the self-esteem of pupils (these may include subsidised workshops and school trips, music and instrumental tuition, free places at school-run extra-curricular clubs and external clubs where appropriate);
• interventions and support through small group work to develop Personal, Social and Health Education skills;
• interventions and support through small group work to develop self-confidence and communication skills
• supporting in paying contributions towards educational visits and activities;

to purchase:

• • one reading book, of the child’s choice, to the value of £5 each (3 books per school year) from the school’s Book Fair;
  •  the school PE kit for each child per school year / every two years;
  • school uniform is paid for through our supplier.

The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and SENDCo are the Lead Teachers for Pupil Premium.  They assess the children’s needs and to plan the appropriate support.  They also track the educational progress and achievement of each Pupil Premium eligible child.
